The French Wine Society is pleased to virtually welcome Dewey Markham for a fascinating and insightful webinar on the Bordeaux Classification System of 1855!
This webinar is part of the 8-month French Wine Scholar e-learning program starting March 1st.
The topic:
The 1855 Classification is a cornerstone for understanding Bordeaux and its wines. More than just a list of the Médoc's top reds and the best whites in Sauternes, the Classification is the summit of a commercial system which touches every wine produced throughout the region. Its origins are often told, but all too often adulterated with myth and misunderstanding. In fact, the Classification's creation is more involved than commonly thought, and its current importance is greater than generally acknowledged. The presenter:
Dewey Markham, Jr., the author of the James Beard Award-winning book 1855: A History of the Bordeaux Classification, will explain what makes the Classification unique to Bordeaux, why some areas such as Saint-Emilion and Pomerol were not included, and how it influences--and how it does not--the character of the wines we enjoy today.
