The second label phenomenon was the brain child of French enologist Emile Peynaud, professor at the University of Bordaux. In the 1970s, he encouraged châteaux to bottle lesser lots and wine made from young vines separately in order to maintain the integrity of the château’s grand vin. The idea was to make a good, albeit, less concentrated second label that mirrored the grand vin in style and flavor profile at a more modest price. But over the past 40 years, the second wines have taken on a life of their own. In this seminar, we will taste five grand vins and their second labels and discuss history in the making.
Do today’s second labels have a kinship to their grand vins or have they become separate entities and brands in their own right? You be the judge in this hedonistic flight of five top-notch Bordeaux and their second labels.
